Description
René Guénon (1886-1951) was a French cultural philosopher, one of the most significant, yet little-known figures of the twentieth century. Guénon's influence can be felt primarily in the French-speaking world, and here it is enough to think of such well-known figures of literature, science and philosophical thought as Romain Roland, André Malraux, André Gide, Simone Weil, Carl Schmitt, Alain Danielou or the most influential figure in twentieth-century religious studies, Mircea Eliade. However, he had the greatest influence on the representatives of the traditional school that developed precisely as a result of his work. Only three names are worth mentioning here. The Italian Julius Evola, although he disagreed with Guénon on many issues, still considered him "the master of modern times". For the art historian Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, who was born in Ceylon but lives in America, his encounter with Guénon's works was decisive. Béla Hamvas saw in Guénon the key to understanding modern times, because it was he who revealed with complete clarity the idea of tradition and the relationship between tradition and modernity. This book, which the reader holds in his hands, is René Guénon's masterpiece of historical philosophy, and at the same time one of the outstanding pieces of literature that specifically examines a world in a state of crisis. According to Guénon's view, what makes modern civilization a true anomaly is precisely the fact that it is the only civilization that refuses to acknowledge the transcendental system of human relations and has developed exclusively along material lines. René Guénon's masterpiece, The Dominion of Quantity and the Signs of the Times, offers today's man the opportunity to look at his own world not only from the inside, but also from the outside, from a perspective illuminated by the light of the sacred traditions present in both the East and the West.
