Description
Károly Tóth's book examines the history of the Hódmezővásárhely artist group from several perspectives. The volume does not focus exclusively on the artists who created there (János Tornyai, Gyula Rudnay, Béla Endre, János Pásztor), but rather aims to provide a broader picture of what kind of artist colonies and artist groups operated in rural Hungary at the turn of the century, and what principles and goals guided them. The book provides insight into the research-historical background of Hungarian and European artist colonies, explores the development of the concept of Great Plain painting, and shows how the artists contributed to the revival of the cultural and artistic life of a rural town, from the founding of the local ethnographic museum to the creation of a ceramic art workshop. The volume is accompanied by a significant bibliography, chronology, and exhibition list. This is complemented by previously unpublished photographs documenting the life of the artist group.
